Yes, Czechoslovakia was once part of the former Soviet Union’s Eastern Bloc, however, unlike other former members of the Warsaw Pact, it’s located in Central Europe. Its capital, Prague, is one of the oldest and most beautiful world cities in Europe.

Unlike many other countries, Czechoslovakia didn’t experience any devastating bombings during WWII, so almost all of its historic heritage has been kept intact.

So, it should come as no surprise that the Czech Republic is a popular expat destination. It’s rich in history and natural sights, but best of all, it has a relatively low cost of living when compared to other Western European countries. Also, since the Czech Republic is located in central Europe, it’s a central travel hub. You can travel to almost any destination from there, be it to the UK, Norway, Germany or even Russia and Greece.

But all of that aside, the Czech Republic is also popular amongst expats, due to its many appealing cities.

<p It’s also the cultural, economic and political centre of central Europe, thanks to its rich history and location. With its medieval architecture, amazing attractions such as the world’s oldest astronomical clock, art, museums and traditional cafés, it’s not a surprise that Prague is one of the best cities in the Czech Republic.

It boasts a great expat community and is somewhat affordable when it comes to food and rent. Also, since the city’s economy is booming, it’s fairly easy to find a job there, even as a foreigner.

Hustopeče

This small city, located in the Břeclav District, is mainly known for its quality fruit and wine growing. However, it’s also home to the world’s best high jumpers competing in, yup you guessed it, the Moravia High Jump Tour.

Hustopeče is known for its historical value, too. It was actually first mentioned in 1247, almost 800 hundred years ago. There are a few very interesting historical sights you can see in this small picturesque city, with the most popular one being the St. Wenceslaus Church.

Černošice

Černošice is a city located in the Prague-West District and is part of the capital’s metropolitan area. It’s a bus ride away from Prague, located just 5 kilometres southwest of it.

Cesky Krumlov

Nestled in the South Bohemia region, Cesky Krumlov takes the top position when it comes to charm and has consistently ranked as one of the best cities in the Czech Republic. Evaded bombing during the Second World War, the city has preserved its Old Town where cobblestone streets and a graceful main square are adorned with houses painted in soft pastel hues.

Its UNESCO World Heritage city centre, a magnificent 13th-century castle housing one of the few remaining Baroque theatres in Europe, and numerous medieval buildings are on top of the list of things you must see. The Vltava River flows through the city, offering picturesque views and the opportunity for activities such as rafting.

Additionally, Cesky Krumlov is home to several unique museums, including the Moldavite Museum, the Museum of Torture and the Museum Fotoatelier Seidel. Art lovers should not miss the Egon Schiele Art Centrum, dedicated to the works of the famous Austrian painter. This gallery, rich in both art and history, is a testament to the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary, also known as Carlsbad, stands out as one of the best places to live in the Czech Republic and is famous for its thermal spa waters and elegant colonnades. Renowned as a spa resort town since the 14th century, it attracts visitors with its hot springs, which are believed to have healing properties due to their mineral composition and carbon dioxide content.

While spa treatments are available through spas and special bathing houses, there are also free water taps under colonnades with water temperatures reaching up to 100 degrees Celsius.

The city is only a two-hour train ride from Prague and offers picturesque sights. The St. Linhart Game Reserve is home to Dybowski’s sika deer and other wildlife, while a cable car ride to the Diana Lookout Tower provides stunning views of the city and surrounding greenery.

For a quick overview, take the funicular up to the Diana Observation Tower for stunning views, or hike up and then relax in the thermal waters of one of the spas. Don’t forget to visit the Elephant, the oldest café in town, for some delicious cakes.

A visit to the Museum of Glass MOSER, showcasing luxury glassware, is highly recommended for those looking to purchase discounted pieces. Additionally, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in August is a major event attracting Hollywood celebrities and offering various activities throughout the city.

Brno

Brno is a city that attracts many young expats between the ages of 26 and 35.
